Free College Essays - Tone, Allusions and Diction in Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter :: Scarlet Letter essays

The Scarlet Letter - Use of Tone, Allusions and Diction Puritans are well known for their morality in discipline, religious intolerance, and harsh punishments for those defying their beliefs. These Puritan influences had a great impact on early American literature. Nathaniel Hawthorne provides an illustrated look into the Puritans and their community in his classic The Scarlet Letter. Through Hawthorne's use of tone, allusions with Hester and Dimmesdale, and the diction that is used to describe how the village behaves during the multiple scaffold scenes he provides a disapproval for these rigid moralists' extreme way of life. Hawthorne's use of tone has revealed his feelings regarding the Puritans. He starts out relatively early in the book describing these people as "being of the most intolerant brood" (86) unveiling at once the lack of understanding they had. Finding out about Hester and Pearl, the village at once "scorned them in their hearts, and...reviled them with their tongues" (86) exposing to us the discriminating disposition that the Puritans have for those who were not exactly like them or followed their rules. The tone that is inferred from the harsh words allows us to see the negative attitude that the narrator feels for these Protestants. Along with the tone of "voice" that we can almost hear speak to us with Nathaniel Hawthorne's rich yet somewhat chilling vocabulary is the allusion among the Puritans and their influence. As the Puritans could see that the "same scorching stigma was on them both!" (225), Nathaniel Hawthorne alluded to the same marks on the crucified Christ, disclosing how scornful the convictions by the Puritans were. As he discusses the generations to come of puritanical influence, Hawthorne sees them wearing "the blackest shade of Puritanism" (211). This allusion allows us to see the perniciousness that flourished inside of the Puritans and how it was carried on from one generation to another. The allusions displaying the author's feelings of the religious intolerance of the Puritans are further developed with his choice of diction during the scaffold scenes. The Puritans' feelings were so lacking of compassion that "they were stern enough to look upon her death†¦without a murmur†¦ but had none of the heartlessness of another social state." (53). This implied that when faced with death of a betrayer they would not have a reaction because their commiseration was completely devoted towards social applications.

Comparing the Personality of Matt Dillon throughout Three Episodes of Gun Smoke :: Gun Smoke

In this essay I am going to compare the personality of Matt Dillon throughout three episodes of Gun Smoke. Matt Dillon is the sheriff of Dodge City and throughout these three episodes, with the help of this trustee companion Chester (The Deputy), he is able maintain the law and keep peace in the turbulent town of Dodge City. Matt Dillon right from the start of "Loch invar" demonstrates that he has a rough hard personality. With his harsh quick responses to whomever he meets, to some extent makes him seem unfriendly and unsociable to whomever he is talking to. Throughout the three shows we see that Matt Dillon is a man that likes to stay to himself. He doesn't like to respond much to inquiries or comments; it seems like he picks his conversations carefully. For example, in the episode of "Paid Killer", Chester is worried and anxious that walking around at midnight with a full moon could possibly result in a fatality. Chester keeps on making small comments regarding the situation, but every time Chester brings up a point it is resolved with a short brute response. Not willing or wanting to say much, Matt just keeps on walking down the dark street, reminding Chester that if it is going to happen he rather not prolong the sentence. This scene also demonstrated the fact that Matt Dillon hated depending on other people for a course of action to take place. We see him get a little anxious and kind of aggravated, since the power to control the situation is not in his hands. Also, Matt Dillon is the kind of person that no matter what the problem is, whether it is mental or physical, he seems to overcome them no matter what. This example comes from the episode "Loch invar". Here, Matt is playing a harmless game of checkers with the doctor of Dodge City. When it seems like the game is almost over for Matt, all of a sudden he pulls out a move that devastates the doctor and proclaims him the winner of the game. Another way to prove this point, I am going to have to bring up a scene from the same episode but a little bit further into it. This scene is where Matt and Chester return to town from a long day's journey of hunting down a supposed killer, and after looking all day, return with nothing to show for it.

My Fathers Enduring Love

The people that get to know us best, from our virtues to flaws, are our parents. They sacrifice many luxuries in order to give their children the best life possible. My father has had a huge impact on my life and it is because of him that I am the person I am today. A lot of people say that I am a lot like my dad, because we both have the same personality and thinking process. From observing my dad's behavior and listening to his lectures over the years, he has definitely had a great influence in my life choices overall. My father, went through so much in his life to get to where he is today. My dad is a strong confident man who left his hometown in California when he was eighteen years old and moved to Texas alone. He didn't know anyone, had little money in his pocket and worked in the most demeaning jobs, some I would never even imagine working in myself. Nonetheless, he had no other choice. With so many obstacles in his way he never stopped looking at the bright side of his journey with ambition as his only friend and motivator towards a better and more successful life. On April 5th 1990, The day I opened my eyes to the world and the day my father started giving me unconditional love. My father was and always will be my number one idol. His journey as a teenager made me realize how easy mine is compared to his. I am so grateful to have him. The things he taught me have influenced my life in different ways. For example, I learned to always be honest and tell the truth no matter what happens, to never try to be someone whom I'm not and to respect people no matter what. All these examples along with other things that he has taught me during my life helped me to start working towards my goal and to achieve it. As he has always told me and continues to tell me, ‘Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it'. He proved that to me. My father always placed his family as his number one priority. Since the day he and my mother got married twenty five years ago, he has been working nonstop, seven days a week at times. So he could guarantee a better future for his wife and children, which he did. My dad has a very special place in my life and always will not just because he is my dad, but because he is a special and strong person in my eyes. Dad has always told me no matter what happens to you in life pick yourself up and keep going strong as you were. So even though my dad has chronic Arthritis in his hands and feet, he still worked hard until the point of retiring. I admire and respect my father for everything he does and has done. I work hard at everything I do for the greatest reward of all. Knowing that my accomplishments are making my father proud. To conclude, I could not have asked for a better father. My dad has always been there for me, and I will always be there for him. I respect and admire my father because he has earned it. I believe my father is the best at everything he does. He has been through so much in his life and still is a happy wonderful man. He never looks behind he always looks at the bright side in every problem, he always says the past is the past â€Å"Always remember it but do not dwell on it† you should dwell on the future that is the important thing.

A Cheerful Christmas Memory

Recalling this moment, I remember all the soft noise. And together we make screams of colorful clouds of different shades on the children's body and trembling on different flat boxes. In the summer of mid July, the warmth of many letters is comparable to the warmth of the sun. I am very acquainted with these situations. Music is exciting. I think we are a group, but they are very personal. My intense heart knows that this will be another nervous moment again. I love children, but I do not usually feel that it is warm and ambiguous until Christmas, Let's have memories. However, in October every year, mothers support Christmas and are preparing for vacation. I like Christmas bringing out tradition and many love in many ways. When the Christmas tree is near, the world seems not to be such a bad place. Let's decorate your child every year! Then, as they left the house, they had decorations to carry with them. We let the children choose to decorate them rather than to decorate them. In or der to find out when to select, write the year at the bottom. Ideally, I will choose the accessory which is hard to break. Your favorite Christmas memories may be different from us. Everyone may have different Christmas memories. As an example, my wife 's favorite Christmas memories is the first time for us to hang the picture of the youngest child on a tree. My mother-in-law made Christmas decorations with the pictures of our youngest children. When they got big enough to make their own accessories, they started adding their own unique Christmas accessories with their own hands. These are our valuable souvenirs. Over time, these decorations become increasingly special as children grow. Today we have only 1 child left, and she is at home a year and a half before she can attend college.

Since the absolute calculated t value is less than the critical, we fail to reject the null hypothesis of the test. Thus, we can conclude that at 5% level of significance, the mean salary for female human resource directors is equal to the mean salary for male human resource directors. Moreover, as much as the means for the two independent samples are literary, not equal, the t-test has statistically proven that female human resource managers’ salaries are not different from that of male human resource managers.

Health Care Bill and Impact on the Community Essay

Health Care Bill and Impact on the Community - Essay Example Health care policy is challenging and dynamic in nature with tremendous changes taking place since the beginning of the 21st century to address increased disparities in health care, escalating costs of health care, changing population, advancement in medical technology, inequalities in health care access, and public and private health care financing growth. In terms of policy-making, nurses and other members of the health care team are mistakenly viewed as not having the necessary knowledge and skills required in the legislative arena; contrary, nurses and other members of the health care team act an advocacy role in policies, laws, or regulations governing the larger health care system (Abood, 2007, 1). Nurses are the first to see the impact of a certain policy to meeting the needs of the patients. If nurses have the advocacy role, the House of Representatives and the Senate House act the legislative roles and are responsible for the propositions of bills or acts concerning health c are. One of the examples of current bill in the U.S. health care system is the H.R.2 Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act. This will be discussed in detail in the next section. In addition, the paper will also discuss the interest groups for/against the bill, the potential impact in the community and who will be affected, and the personal opinion of the author on the bill. H.R.2 Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act The H.R.2 Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act was read on the second time and placed on the calendar of the 112th Congress of the Senate of the United States on January 26, 2011. This act aims to repeal the job-killing health care law and health care-related provisions in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 under the Sec.2. (a) of the bill which states that â€Å"Effective as of the enactment of Public Law 111–148, such Act is repealed, and the provisions of law amended or repealed by such Act are restored or revive d as if such Act had not been enacted† (The Library of Congress, 2012, 1). The Obamacare or the Health Care Bill of Obama administration is viewed by many as a job-killing bill; meaning, a reduction in health care costs and improvement in health accessibility would result in significant job losses in the U.S. economy. On the other note, repealing the bill would mean loss of benefits of some Americans including insurance reforms that allow parents to keep children on their plans until the age of 26 and prohibition of insurers from imposing lifetime limits on coverage. The introduction of the bill to the House of Representatives received a number of support and protests. Interest groups supporting the repealing of the health care bill include the Republican Congress, economists, financial groups, and employers. Repealing the health care bill supporters claimed that the health care bill will transfer one-sixth of the U.S. economy into the hands of the politicians and agency burea ucrats and that the health care bill have done little to address the problems. Worst, the health care b
